Levo Nurse Companion
Levo, a SaaS platform for HR in the healthcare sector, aimed to tackle high employee turnover among nurses and caregivers by implementing a gamified rewards system.

About Levo Nurse Companion
Levo, a SaaS platform focused on HR solutions in the healthcare industry, collaborated with our design team to address high turnover rates among nurses and caregivers. Over a two-week design sprint, we developed a gamified system that rewards healthcare staff for meeting specific goals, aimed at improving engagement and retention. Through a series of workshops, we prioritized features and crafted user stories that reflected the needs of both healthcare professionals and HR administrators.

Background
The healthcare industry faces a significant challenge with high turnover rates, particularly among nurses and caregivers, due to burnout, lack of incentives, and demanding work conditions. Recognizing this, Levo sought to create a platform that would incentivize healthcare professionals through gamification and rewards to boost retention, improve engagement, and enhance overall job satisfaction.
Project Goals
- Incentivize Engagement: Design a gamified system that rewards nurses and caregivers for meeting job-related goals.
- Improve Retention: Decrease the turnover rate by creating a positive feedback loop that recognizes employees’ hard work.
- Create a Scalable Solution: Develop a solution that could be easily adapted for various clients within the healthcare sector.
Discovery Phase
The discovery phase was pivotal in defining Levo’s goals, understanding the users’ needs, and identifying the core features required for success.
Workshop with Stakeholders
We held a collaborative workshop with Levo stakeholders focused on:
- Lean Canvas Model: Used to identify the core problem, target audience, and key value propositions — providing a high-level view of the issues Levo aimed to address in healthcare retention.
- Features Brainstorming Session: We brainstormed potential features across gamification, recognition systems, and team communication tools, then categorized them to focus on core functionalities essential to improving engagement and retention.

Interview Insights
Through interviews with healthcare professionals, we gathered key insights on their needs, challenges, and preferences. One of the main takeaways: the app should display recognition badges, offers, and incentives based on user behavior, since individuals are motivated by different factors — money, days off, or words of encouragement.

Benchmarking Gamification Platforms
- Duolingo and Babbel — Progress tracking, milestone achievements, and streak-based incentives that create a sense of accomplishment and enhance user retention.
- Uber and Skillshare — Tailored rewards and quick feedback loops that reinforce user motivation and satisfaction.
- Burger King and McDonald’s — Point systems and rewards that drive frequent engagement, adapted into Levo’s achievement recognition structure.
User Personas
Based on interviews and research, we developed Nurse Jane — a persona that guided our design approach and ensured the platform addressed the needs and motivations of healthcare professionals.

Key Design Solutions
Gamified Dashboard — A centralized area where users can view progress, upcoming goals, and achievements. Personalized experience that encourages users to complete tasks.
Progress and Goal Tracking — A visual tracker displayed progress toward set goals, offering a sense of accomplishment and encouraging consistent engagement.

Rewards Center — A section dedicated to redeeming points for various rewards, from additional leave days to small tokens of recognition, reinforcing the incentive structure.

Check-in Feature — Based on feedback from nurses and caregivers, we integrated a check-in tool that encouraged open communication between team members and supervisors, helping to address burnout and maintain a positive workplace culture.

This initial version (v1) of Levo Nurse Companion addresses key pain points identified through user interviews and prioritization workshops. The project is ongoing and we are continuously refining the design based on user feedback.
